Summary

This original, self-contained interactive design aid will help to calculate the basic parameters of a high frequency electronic ballast, where a switchmode square wave inverter supplies a HID lamp connected in series with an appropriate inductor. It includes special calculators (programmed in Javascript) which are backed by a fully and clearly explained theoretical descripition of ballast curves and related power control methods.


Chapter 1, briefly describes a simple electronic characterization of HID lamps operating at high frequency.

Chapter 2, connected through an appropriate inductor to a high frequency (f>20kHz) symmetrical square wave voltage source, the effective power of HID lamps is calculated. A special function is derived which can be considered as the basic function for the selection of ballast curves and related power control methods.

Chapter 3, gives a full description of ballast curves based on a periodical, piecewise exponential, current wave forms. A distinguished family of ballast curves satisfying the "nominal condition" for new lamps is introduced. Selection of a ballast curve for a given lamp, based on the maximum allowed power, is also described.

Chapter 4, based on the control of the amplitude/frequency of a high frequency square wave inverter, methods for power control between the minimum and maximum lamp voltage (lamp resistance) are introduced.
